Admixtures

Waterproofing admixtures enable concrete to become waterproof. They can be added to the concrete at the batching plant or applied topically after pouring it. Admixtures tend to be pour-blocking or crystalline in nature. This makes them ideal for swimming pools, water retaining structures and marine projects.

Admixtures information

With over 120 years of experience and a highly trained team, we can provide you with the best possible guidance when it comes to choosing the right waterproofing admixtures.

Waterproofing admixtures work by filling the micro spaces in the concrete matrix left by water during the hydration process of forming concrete. Water and other contaminants can use these spaces to penetrate the concrete, leading to leaking and long-term concrete breakdown.

The different types of waterproofing admixtures include crystalline, hydrogel, and pore-blocking/densifying. Only crystalline admixtures have self-healing properties.

Most waterproofing admixtures can be used in concrete drinking water tanks. The technical data sheet for each product will highlight whether the admixture is suitable drinking water / certified to AS 4020:2018.

In most cases, waterproofing admixtures can seal cracks up to 0.4mm. These cracks need to be static (not moving). If they are kinetic (constantly moving), the sealing effects of the admixture will be continually interrupted, and leaking may continue.

Admixtures should be added during the batching process for even distribution, either in dry batch or central mix operations. Maintain air temperatures between 4°C and 35°C during curing, and protect the concrete from direct sunlight and rain for the first 24 hours. Always refer to the product instructions for specific guidance on the admixture being used.
